Eastern Florida Golfers Win Darton Tournament; Cooke Medalist

Oct. 22, 2013 - Eastern Florida State College's golf team won the Darton Fall Invitational/NJCAA Division I District 4 Preview at the Stonebridge Golf and Country Club in Albany, GA on Tuesday.

The victory was the first in three fall tournaments so far for the Titans who are ranked eighth nationally in the Golf World/Nike Golf NJCAA Division I College Coaches poll.

Eastern Florida shot 289 for a 54-hole total of 846, winning by 16 strokes. Host Darton shot 289 for a second-place total of 862. Wallace State Community College of Alabama shot 286 for a third-place total of 867.

Titans freshman Drew Cooke of Homassa, FL and Lecanto High, shot 70 on Tuesday for a 54-hole total of 211 and medalist honors.

"It feels pretty good," Cooke said. "I got in the zone. Everything just flew by and it happened by itself. All I did was swing the club and everything else just happened.

"My second shots were probably the strongest. I believe I hit five shots to within two feet of the hole for five straight holes (between holes six and 14). I feel like I am making the adjustments I need in practice. I am practicing very diligently."

Titans sophomore Arthur Leonard shot 71 for a total of 212 and a tie for second place. Freshman Brad Gray shot 73 for 213 and tied for fifth. Sophomore Kyle Benson carded a 75 for 214 and a seventh-place finish. Classmate Nick Maynard shot 76 for 225.

"Today was a terrific day," Eastern Florida head coach Jamie Howell said. "We had to play in the heat of battle with teams chasing us. You want to see how the guys react and they did well. The golf course played much harder, much more difficult but we handled it really well."

The Titans shot a 36-hole total of 285-272-557 to lead after Monday first rounds.

Next up for Eastern Florida is the Nov. 1-3 Collegiate Players Cup Ryder Cup-style tournament with NCAA Division II Florida Tech.
