Eastern Florida Golf Leads After First Round of Darton Tournament

Oct. 21, 2013 - Eastern Florida State College's golf team finished the first day of the Darton Fall Invitational/NJCAA Division I District 4 Preview in first place at the Stonebridge Golf and Country Club in Albany, GA.

Eastern Florida, ranked eighth nationally in the latest Golf World/Nike Golf NJCAA Division I College Coaches poll, shot a 36-hole total of 285-272-557. The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday.

Host Darton is second at 573. Wallace State Community College and Meridian Community College are tied for third at 584.

For Eastern Florida, Kyle Benson shot 68-71-139; Brad Gray 71-69-140; Arthur Leonard 72-69-141; Drew Cooke 78-63-141 and Nick Maynard 74-75-149.

Cooke's 63 tied the competitive course record.

"The boys have been working hard for the last three weeks and Monday was one of those days where all the hard work paid off," Eastern Florida head coach Jamie Howell said.

"Everyone on the team committed to getting better and that's what we have been working. Not every day is going to be like Monday but Monday gave them a good idea of what we are capable of doing."
