BCC Golfers Tied for Ninth After National Tournament's First Day

May 14, 2013 - Windy conditions on the back nine threw Brevard Community College's golf team a curve on Tuesday's first day of the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament.

Playing on The Rawls Course in Lubbock, TX, BCC shot a team score of 299, finding itself tied for ninth among the 24 teams competing.

Midland Community College and Odessa College, both of Texas, led the first day with team totals of 291.

"There were some pretty rough winds," BCC head coach Jamie Howell said. "The last four holes got away from us."

Howell estimated winds were blowing steadily at about 20 mph with gusts to about 30.

"The scores went up for about an hour and a half period," Howell said.

Sophomore Keith Greene had the best day for BCC, finishing with a 73. Classmates Anthony Skirk and Blake Biggs finished at 75, and freshmen Arthur Leonard at 76 and Kyle Benson at 83.

Chandler McDonald of USC Lancaster Community College was the individual leader at 68.

Benson tees off first for BCC at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. He will be followed by Biggs at 8:41, Skirk at 8:52, Greene at 9:03 and Leonard at 9:14.

The tournament concludes on Friday. Live stats and coverage can be found at

BCC is competing in the tournament for the 11th straight year and is seeking its eighth national title.
