BCC Golf Team Captures Kling Memorial Trophy
February 17, 2013 - Shaking off a 90-minute frost delay and temperatures in the low 30s, Brevard Community College's golf team rallied from 12 strokes back to win the Elizabeth Kling Memorial Invitational at Faulkner State College in Fairhope, AL on Sunday.
The victory was the first in seven matches BCC has played in its fall and spring seasons. It also marked the first time it has finished ahead of Central Alabama Community College in the six times they have competed in the fall and spring campaigns.
BCC shot 316 to finish Saturday's first round in fifth place but stormed back on Sunday with a round of 294 for a total of 610.
"We put together a good round," BCC head coach Jamie Howell said. "And Central Alabama stumbled. It went the other way today.
"It validates all the hard work the players have put in. If we take care of our own business good things can happen. We have been waiting for a van trip like this since the fall. It's nice to come home with someone's else's trophy."
Wallace State of Alabama was second at 612 and Central Alabama third at 613.
Darton College's Nick Greene shot 74-68-142 for medalist honors. BCC's Anthony Skirk shot 78-72-150 for fourth and Blake Biggs 76-75-151 for fifth. BCC's Keith Greene shot 83-73-156; Brett Maue 86-74-160 and Arthur Leonard 79-76-155.
"All the elements were not in our favor," Howell said of the cold temperatures. "You cope with it and find a way."
The tournament was played on the par 72, 6,920-yard Rock Creek Golf Club.
Next up for BCC is a one-day match on Feb. 28 against St. Bonaventure University at the Rockledge Country Club.
