Eastern Florida Women Close Conference Season With a Victory
Feb. 22, 2014 - Eastern Florida's women's basketball team closed its Florida College System Activities Association Southern Conference schedule in style on Saturday defeating host Indian River State College 87-71 in Fort Pierce.
The victory moved Eastern Florida to 3-12 in the conference and 6-23 overall, doubling its overall win total from last season.
Freshman leading scorer Jessica Doyle once again set the pace for Eastern Florida with 29 points. Doyle was 16-for-16 from the free throw line, 14 coming in the second half. She also hit three three-pointers from the floor.
Classmate Deja Bradshaw added 19 points while freshmen Rachelle Aupont and Kristina Bugarski scored 11 apiece and sophomore Kendall Hedgecock 10.
Eastern Florida led 37-28 at the half and while Indian River made several runs and closed to within six points in the second half, spurred on by an enthusiastic crowd, the Titans answered every time.
But, they still had to battle. Bradshaw injured an ankle with seven minutes to go and Bugarski fouled out leaving only freshman Beth Carlson in reserve. But, the Titans prevailed.
"This was a great way to end the conference season," said Eastern Florida head coach Jim Grimes. "We really showed some toughness. I have told the team many times that you are often measured by how you react to adversity.
"We had plenty of chances to fold but answered the bell every time. I am really proud of our effort."
Eastern Florida closes its season at 6 p.m. Monday in the Melbourne Campus gym against Trinity Baptist College of Jacksonville. The Titans will recognize Hedgecock, Kiersten Colgan and Tomoriya Hamm on Sophomore Night.
Admission is free.
