Eastern Florida Women Fall to Palm Beach, 78-57
Jan. 22, 2014 - Eastern Florida's women's basketball team played Palm Beach State College nearly even in the second half on Wednesday but could not make up all of a 37-18 first-half deficit in falling 78-57 at the Melbourne Campus gym.
The Florida College System Activities Association defeat dropped Eastern Florida to 3-17 overall and 0-6 in the conference but was quite a turnaround from a 96-35 defeat it suffered at Palm Beach on Jan. 8.
Palm Beach, which came into the game ranked 16th in the nation, improved to 18-3 overall and 6-0 in conference.
Freshman Jessica Doyle led Eastern Florida with 31 points, 15 coming on three-pointers. Classmate Rachelle Aupont added 15 points.
"I was disappointed with the first half, I didn't think we started very well," said Eastern Florida head coach Jim Grimes. "We specifically emphasized being aggressive like you saw us being in the second half.
"My first thought is I wished we would have played the way we did the second half the whole game but I'm happy with how we finished the game. It's a 40-minute game.
"Our effort was obviously a lot better than it was the last time. We played hard. That's step one for us. Whenever we play we have to play harder than our opponent," Grimes added about his team that dressed only seven players. "We did for the second half. We just have to build on it so we can do that for 40 minutes."
Eastern Florida got within nine points, 39-30, on an Aupont three-pointer with 16 minutes and 37 seconds to play but could get no closer.
Next up for Eastern Florida is a 2 p.m. Saturday home game against conference foe Broward College. Admission is free.
Sophomore Ashley Jones led Palm Beach with 24 points.
