Eastern Florida Women Host Nationally Ranked Palm Beach State on Wednesday
Jan. 21, 2014 - Eastern Florida State's women's basketball team plays two conference games at home in the Melbourne Campus gym this week.
The Titans host Florida College System Activities Association Southern Conference leader Palm Beach State, 17-3 overall and 5-0 in the conference, at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and conference foe Broward College at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Broward game will be the first of a basketball tripleheader in the Melbourne gym with NCAA Division II Florida Tech hosting Sunshine State Conference foe Eckerd College for women's and men's games at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday respectively. Florida Tech's gym is in use that evening.
Admission to all games is free.
Eastern Florida is 3-16 overall and 0-5 in conference but turned in a strong effort on Saturday, falling 59-56 at conference second-place Indian River State. Freshmen Jessica Doyle and Rachelle (Rocky) Aupont are pacing Eastern Florida, averaging 17.1 and 11.5 points per game respectively.
Aupont also is Eastern Florida's leading rebounder at 8.6 per game. Doyle is ranked 11th nationally in free throw percentage at 84.8 percent.
"Palm Beach is one of the best teams in the country, and Coach (Kris) Ruffo does an outstanding job," said Eastern Florida head coach Jim Grimes. "It is always a challenge to compete at such a high level, but this is how you get better. We are excited to host them this week."
Palm Beach, ranked 16th nationally, gave Ruffo her 300th career victory on Saturday, Jan. 11, defeating conference foe St. Petersburg College 70-57.
Sophomore forward/center Ashley Jones leads Palm Beach in scoring, averaging 15.9 points per game. Freshman Tashi Thompson is the only other Panther in double figures, averaging 10 points per game. Jones leads in rebounding at 11.4 per game. Sophomore guard Veronica Ryan leads in assists at 6.2 per game.
