Eastern Florida Women Host Miami on Saturday

Jan. 9, 2014 - Eastern Florida State College's women's basketball team makes another run at securing its first Florida College System Activities Association Southern Conference victory on Saturday when its hosts Miami Dade College at 2 p.m. on the Melbourne Campus.

Admission is free.

Eastern Florida is 3-13 overall and 0-2 in conference, losing to Broward College and Palm Beach State. Miami Dade is 4-11 overall and 1-0 in conference having defeated host Broward 88-59 on Wednesday.

Sophomore guard Vernessa Hinnant leads Miami Dade in scoring averaging 14.8 points per game. Sophomore guards Jordyn Bond and Alexis Ungro are close behind at 14.6 and 10.5 respectively.

Bond and Hinnant lead in rebounding at 7.8 and 7.4 per game respectively. Sophomore guard Jakia Grimsley leads in assists with 3.1 per game.

Despite his team's struggles, which include dressing only seven players, Eastern Florida head coach Jim Grimes remains upbeat.

"A lot of basketball remains to be played," Grimes said. "We are still practicing hard and will play hard remaining true to our process. Yes, things haven't gone our way but it hasn't been due to a lack of effort.

"If we continue to put forth the effort the results will come."

Eastern Florida plays six of its next eight games at home after playing 12 of its first 16 on the road.
