Eastern Florida Women Fall 75-70 to Skagit Valley in Overtime
Nov. 25, 2013 - Eastern Florida State College's women's basketball team let a 22-point first-half lead slip away in dropping a 75-70 overtime decision to Skagit Valley of Washington on Monday in the Melbourne Campus gym.
Eastern Florida, which fell to 2-7, led 41-19 with 3 minutes and 12 seconds to play in the first half and 41-27 at halftime. But Skagit Valley, playing its first game of the season, owned the second half and overtime, outscoring Eastern Florida 48-29.
The game was tied 64-64 at the end of regulation.
The visitors didn't lead until they grabbed a 69-67 advantage with 2:15 remaining in overtime. Eastern Florida tied it at 69-69 with 1:46 to play on a Kristina Bugarski basket but Skagit closed the door down the stretch for the victory.
Freshman Jessica Doyle, who entered the game ranked 13th in the nation in points per game at 20.6 and fourth nationally on 28-of-69 three pointers, led Eastern Florida with 23 points, 18 on three-pointers. Sophomore Kendall Hedgecock had 11 points and freshman Rachelle Aupont 10.
Eastern Florida opened the game with verve, opening leads of 21-2 and 27-11 before Skagit Valley, which makes the trip to Florida every other year, was able to settle down.
Samantha Kelleigh led the visitors with 18 points. Melissa Stadt added 16 and Mimi Wood 12.
Next up for Eastern Florida is the Dec. 6-7 Florida JUCO Shootout in Gainesville when it plays Northwest Florida State and Pensacola respectively.
