Classic Games a Means to an End for Lady Titans

December 13, 2012 - A stern challenge awaits the Brevard Community College women's basketball team in Friday night's fourth annual Lady Titans Classic at the Melbourne Campus gym.

BCC, 2-9, concludes Friday's tripleheader at 8 p.m. against Shelton State Community College of Alabama, which is 12-0 and outscoring its opponents by an average of 50.4 points per game.

Shelton State, of Tuscaloosa, is scoring an average of 87.8 points per game while allowing an average of 37.4. Conversely BCC is averaging 53.9 points per game while allowing an average of 71.

Shelton State's Lady Bucs, who play in the Alabama Community College Association, have surpassed the 90-point mark six times and scored 100 once.

BCC head coach Renee Bellamy is well aware of what Shelton State presents but is putting the onus on her team to perform.

"Our ladies have played well in four out of the nine games that we have lost in spite of the slow start that (co-captain and leading scorer) Shaneece Stephens is having," Bellamy said.  "We have had some injuries with key players as well that have prevented opportunities for us to be successful; however, that is not an excuse for other individuals with this team to step their game up and perform.

"We must continue to work diligently together to improve daily, then come out to compete and win from within. Our goal is to be playing well in time for the first official Southern Conference game, which is Jan 5. We welcome the challenge and I know that our ladies will come out and compete in order to improve our game performance in preparation toward the Southern Conference."

Center Brianna Lancaster, a sophomore and one of Shelton State's team's five players standing 6 feet or taller, leads the team in scoring averaging 12.9 points per game. Brittany Agee, a 6-foot sophomore guard/forward is averaging 11.9.

Stephens leads BCC in scoring, averaging 14.5 points per game.

The College of Central Florida and ASA College of Brooklyn, N.Y., open the Classic at 4 p.m. Friday and St. Petersburg plays the semi-pro Brevard Flames at 6 p.m.

On Saturday the Brevard Flames play the College of Central Florida at 1 p.m.; Shelton State plays St. Petersburg at 3 p.m. and BCC plays ASA College at 5 p.m.

The College of Central Florida is 3-10; St. Petersburg Community College, 5-5; ASA College, 4-1. The Brevard Flames are playing their first games of the season.

Admission to the Classic is $5 for adults and $3 for youths 17 and under. The concession stand will be open.

BCC wraps up the 2012 portion of its schedule with a 7 p.m. game on Friday, Dec. 28 at Hillsborough Community College. The Lady Titans open 2013 at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3 at home against St. Louis Community College.

"It is imperative that we play competitive teams year in and year out, in order to get stronger and better prepared for our conference," Bellamy said. "Shelton State and ASA along with previous games played such as Chipola, Daytona State, Santa Fe, and Tallahassee Community College are extremely strong competitive teams that will allow us to get better and stronger."
