TAAG Academy Awaits Eastern Florida Men's Basketball Before Challenging Weekend Games
Dec. 10, 2013 - With its most challenging weekend of the season to date looming on Saturday and Sunday Eastern Florida State College head men's basketball coach Jeremy Shulman is exhorting his team not to look ahead.
After all the Titans have a game on Wednesday, a re-match with Tampa's TAAG Academy at 7 p.m. in the Melbourne Campus gym. Admission to Eastern Florida home athletic events is free. TAAG last visited on Saturday Nov. 16 and frustrated the Titans for most of the afternoon before succumbing 80-53.
With nationally ranked and 10-1 Chipola College awaiting the Titans at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Florida College Shootout in Gainesville and previously nationally ranked Santa Fe College, 10-2, set for a 7 p.m. Sunday Shootout game on its home court, Shulman knows how important it is for his team to head north riding a tailwind of momentum.
And nothing could negate that momentum than a subpar performance against TAAG, which is 4-7.
Eastern Florida is 9-1, with an eight-game winning streak. The Titans also have not lost at home in 23 games. After Wednesday the Titans' next home game is the Jan. 8 Florida College System Activities Association Southern Conference opener against Indian River State College.
Freshman Demetrius McReynolds leads Eastern Florida in scoring, averaging 14.2 points per game. He also is one of five Titans averaging double figures, the others being sophomore Torrance Rowe (11.2); sophomore Shaheed Davis (11.9); sophomore Jure Gunjina (11.8); and freshman T.J. Cromer (11.2). Sophomore Mike Kirkland is averaging 9.6 points per game.
Kirkland is the leading rebounder averaging 8.1 per game. Davis is next at 7.2 and Gunjina at 6.2. Sophomore Ben Patrick leads in assists at 5.2 per game. Davis leads in blocks at 1.8 per game. Freshman Jermonh Queen leads in steals at 1.7 per game. Kirkland and McReynolds have 1.6 per game, Rowe 1.3 and Cromer 1.2.
