New Gym Floor Nearing Completion at BCC's Melbourne Campus Gym
September 11, 2012 - Peek into the gym on Brevard Community College's Melbourne Campus and you'll be surprised. The old composite floor . . . is gone.
In its place are the padding, the sub-flooring and the maple planks that comprise the new wood surface. Drilled, hammered and nailed into place the flooring awaits the next steps: sanding that will prepare it for painting and staining and finally completion.
The centerpiece on the floor will be a painted rendition of the sword that comprises the "T" in BCC's Titans athletics logo.
The target for the job to be wrapped up remains Sept. 30 with the first athletic contest to be a 6 p.m. Oct. 9 volleyball match between BCC and Miami-Dade College. Men's and women's basketball also play their home games in the gym now known as The Coliseum.
The 14,400-square foot Robbins Bio-Cushion Classic floor is costing the college $107,800 and is being installed by Impact Sport Surfaces, LLC of Deerfield Beach.
The approximately 80,000-pound total load of sub-flooring, padding and the maple flooring itself arrived Aug. 17 on two flatbed trailers after a five-day trip from northern Wisconsin. Crews have been working five days a week since to cover the composite flooring, the only surface used since the gym opened in 1975.
The wood floor is an improvement in that it provides cushioning and a more forgiving surface so vital in helping prevent injuries to athletes.
