Eastern Florida Baseball Suffers 11-6 Conference Defeat
March 7, 2014 - The numbers tell the story of Eastern Florida's 11-6 Florida College System Activities Association Southern Conference home loss to Broward College on Friday night.
Defensively Eastern Florida committed five errors, walked 11 Broward batters and hit four more. Offensively nine Eastern Florida batters struck out.
"You're not going to win any games doing that," said Eastern Florida head coach Jeff Tam.
Eastern Florida did outhit Broward 9-8 and saw three of its own batters hit by pitches. But only three Eastern Florida batters were walked and Broward's defense committed only one error.
Ten Broward batters did strike out.
The loss dropped Eastern Florida to 11-7 overall and 1-2 in the conference. Broward improved to 11-9 and 1-0. The teams meet again at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bruce Bochy Field on the Melbourne Campus. Admission is free.
Eastern Florida actually led 1-0 after three innings on Friday but Broward scored once in the fourth and four times in the fifth for a 5-1 lead. The Seahawks extended the advantage to 7-1 in the seventh and 10-2 in the eighth.
Christian Diaz's two-out, three-run triple in the bottom of the ninth brought Eastern Florida closer but not close enough.
Starter Jon Piriz, the first of five Titans pitchers, took the loss. Nick Capra collected two singles for Eastern Florida to go with Diaz's triple. Alessandro Lima had a double, walked, was hit twice by pitches and scored a run. Angel Soto scored twice.
