Lack of Timely Hitting Foils BCC as Broward Sweeps

March 2, 2013 - The Broward College Seahawks got the hits when they needed them and Brevard Community College's Titans didn't and thus Broward left town with a two-game sweep on a cold, blustery Saturday at Bruce Bochy Field.

The Seahawks scored all four of their runs in the first three innings, collected all seven of their hits in the first four and held off BCC for a 4-3 victory.

The big and decisive blow for Broward was a one-out, two-run home run to right field by shortstop Brent Zimmerman in the third inning that gave the Seahawks a 4-0 lead.

BCC, which managed just four hits, clawed back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning without the benefit of a hit. Matt Harris was hit by a pitch and stole second. He scored when Hunter Denning swung and missed at a third strike that got away from the Broward catcher.

Denning was safe at first, stole second and scored on a Broward error.

Harris scored BCC's final run after tripling to deep center to open the bottom of the eighth. The Titans subsequently loaded the bases but could not score again. They went down in order in the ninth, losing at home for the eighth time.

Broward, which beat BCC 7-4 on Friday night, improved to 2-0 in the Florida College System Activities Association Southern Conference and 15-7 overall. BCC fell to 2-2 in the conference and 10-10-1 overall.

Danny Dixon took the loss for BCC which next plays a two-day conference home and home series with Palm Beach State, traveling to Lake Worth on Tuesday and returning home to Bruce Bochy Field on the Melbourne Campus for a 5 p.m. Wednesday match up.

Admission to BCC home games is free.

BCC then travels to play conference foe Miami Dade College on Friday and Saturday.
