Baseball Wins Conference Opener

February 26, 2013 - The Brevard Community College baseball team began Florida College System Activities Association Southern Conference play in a winning way on Tuesday defeating Indian River State College 6-5 in 11 innings.

The victory at Bruce Bochy Field on the Melbourne Campus improved BCC's record to 9-8-1 overall. Indian River State fell to 9-9.

The game was a roller coaster for BCC which gave up four unearned runs in the fourth inning and trailed 5-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. BCC plated three runs in its half of the seventh to tie the game at 5-5.

Four innings later BCC won the game in an unconventional manner. Roman Restrepo led off with a double and was replaced by pinch-runner Chris Torres. With Chad Searcy at the plate BCC head coach Jeff Tam called for a bunt. The Indian River State pitcher uncorked a wild pitch allowing Torres to advance to third.

Searcy could not advance Torres bringing Austin Leeney to the plate. Leeney swung and missed at a third-strike pitch that bounded away to the backstop allowing Torres to score to win the game.

Matt Harris was the hitting star for BCC going 4-for-5 with two runs batted in. Chris Dennis had two hits including a double. BCC had 13 hits to seven for Indian River but committed two errors.

James Baggs was the winning pitcher.

BCC and Indian River meet for their second conference game at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Indian River State in Fort Pierce. BCC then hosts conference foe Broward College at 6 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday.

Admission to BCC home games is free.
