Lake-Sumter Shuts Out BCC's Baseball Team 4-0

February 11, 2013 - Brevard Community College's baseball team dropped to 4-4-1 on Monday as three Lake-Sumter Community College pitchers combined on a six-hit shutout for a 4-0 victory at Bruce Bochy Field on the Melbourne Campus.

Lake-Sumter, which improved to 5-3-1, had only four hits but scored four unearned runs. Three of them came in the third inning courtesy of two hits, two hit batters, a walk, a catcher's interference and a BCC error.

Right-hander Kenton Hering went five innings for BCC and took the loss. Right-hander David Wood went six innings for the victory for Lake Sumter. Eau Gallie High graduate and left-hander Bobby Holsombach pitched two innings and right-hander Kuehl McEachern pitched the ninth to complete the shutout.

BCC managed one extra-base hit, a double by Jorge Gonzales with one out in the seventh inning. BCC hitters struck out six times and left six runners on base.

Defensively BCC committed four errors. Lake-Sumter played errorless ball.

"Offensively we had some situations where a clutch hit here or there could have put us at least back in the baseball game," BCC head coach Jeff Tam said.

"It's pitch selection, it's having a different approach and making adjustments. We talked to them about making pitchers pay in hitters' counts."

As for his team's overall effort: "They (Lake-Sumter) grinded out this win," Tam said. "Every play they grinded, every at-bat they grinded. Maybe we need to grind a little harder ourselves."

BCC gets plenty of chances to get back on stride playing at Polk State College at 5 p.m. Tuesday, hosting Polk at 4 p.m. Friday and hosting Central Florida Community College for a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday.

Admission to BCC home games is free.
