National Signing Day Big Success for BCC Program
November 19, 2012 - Collegiate baseball's Division I National Signing Day last Thursday was a huge success for Brevard Community College's baseball program, with players Ashton Fronsoe, Matt Harris and Danny Dixon all signing to move on to four-year schools following their sophomore seasons at BCC.
BCC pitcher Fronsoe, a strong-armed righty from Stuart, FL, has signed with the University of South Alabama, a baseball power in the Sun Belt Conference.
Outfielder Harris, a 6’, 210-pounder who bats left handed, will take his talents to the Big East, to St. John’s University.
Dixon, a hard-throwing left-handed pitcher from Orlando, signed with the University of Central Florida, which will join the Big East Conference in 2013-14.
“As their coach I am fortunate to have had these three players in our program and help them further their education and baseball careers, as long as they keep working hard they will continue to see success in the future,” BCC Head Coach Jeff Tam said.
Last year as a redshirt-freshman, Fronsoe finished with a record of 5-3, and an ERA of 3.70. He also finished with 38 strikeouts, which was good for third most on the team.
Two years ago, Fronsoe redshirted at Division 1 Florida Gulf Coast University.
“It feels awesome,” Fronsoe said. “I am very excited to play for (head coach) Mark Calvi, who was the pitching coach for (2010 National Champion) South Carolina.”
“Ashton is a quiet, no nonsense guy,” Coach Tam said. “When he takes the mound he is all business, executes his game plan very well. He is a hard worker and is always preparing himself for future success. University of South Alabama will be happy to have a player of his quality in their program.”
As a freshman, Harris batted .323 with 11 doubles, and 25 RBI’s. His batting average was third on the team, while he led the Titans in doubles and RBI’s, as just a freshman. Harris also scored 28 runs, good for second on the team.
“It feels good; I’m really excited,” said Harris. “I chose St. John’s because of the coaching staff, and the chance to play for a Big East powerhouse.”
“Matt is a great kid, a great student, and a clutch hitter; as a coach you want Matt to be at the plate in crucial situations,” Coach Tam said. “He has great composure and the ability to slow the game down in tough situations. St. John’s University will love having a player of this quality in their program.”
All three players will finish their sophomore seasons at BCC and then move on to the four-year level.
“I’m very excited to be a part of such a great program,” Dixon said. “I chose UCF because of the great coaching staff, and feel they will make me a better player in the future.”
“Danny is a guy that every time he takes the mound you know he is giving you 100%,” Coach Tam said when asked about Dixon. “He’s a fierce competitor, a great team player, and always works hard, leading by example. Wish him all the best in his future at UCF.”
