Institutional Review Board
The mission of the Eastern Florida State College (EFSC) Institutional Review Board (IRB) is to protect the safety, welfare and confidentiality of human subject participants, researchers and the Institution. The merit of the research is not within the scope of the duties of this board. The Eastern Florida State College IRB will act in accordance with guidelines provided by federal regulations.
Statement of Principles
The EFSC IRB follows Federal regulations outlined in Title 45 Part 46, Protection of Human Subjects which covers the basic ethical principles governing the conduct of human subjects research. These ethical principles are also set forth in the report of the National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research entitled: “Ethical Principles and Guidelines for the Protection of Human Subjects of Research” (the "Belmont Report"). No one should be involved in human subjects research at any level without being familiar with these ethical principles. The principles include:
- Respect for persons
The IRB reviews research proposals to ensure there is consideration for adequate protections of human subjects who may participate in research projects at EFSC. The EFSC IRB is a diverse group of faculty, staff, and external members who review research proposals on a regular basis. Investigators who are interested in conducting research at EFSC that involves obtaining information about EFSC students or employees with plans to share that information externally through publications or presentations must have their research proposals reviewed by the IRB.
The EFSC IRB is comprised of a diverse group of faculty, staff and external members.
Members have a variety of professional backgrounds and expertise in order to understand
the nature of research proposals and to interpret regulations, relevant laws and ethical
standards that may be applicable to the research proposal. Questions about the IRB process should be directed to:
